Emergency Locators
A Personal Locator Beacon, or PLB, is a portable transmitter that sends out a personalized emergency distress signal to your nearest rescue services. Aimed at hikers, backpackers, horsemen, climbers, rafters, kayakers, sailors, hunters, pilots and others who find themselves lost, stranded, injured, or otherwise in need of rescue, Personal Locator Beacons use the same COSPAS-SARSAT satellite notification system as an EPIRB. Each PLB must be registered, at no cost, with NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) who maintains the database for 406 MHz emergency beacons in the U.S. Each PLB has a unique digital code, so search and rescue will be able to immediately know who owns the beacon. Another device, the SPOT Satellite Messenger, provides an alternative to the PLB with similar functionality, but offers additional features like messaging friends and family and tracking on Google maps. The SPOT requires a subscription, whereas the PLB units do not.
