| Introducing the next generation of personal satellite messaging and emergency
communications, ideal for use in hazardous work environments
The SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger (IS) is a GPS-enabled personal satellite
messaging and emergency communications device providing a simple way to help address
lone or remote worker safety. Using the same form factor as our consumer-based SPOT
Satellite GPS Messenger, SPOT IS has been re-engineered and certified to meet the
requirements of hazardous work environments. The easily identifiable blue SPOT IS
is certified Intrinsically Safe for use in Class I, Division 1, Groups A-D environments
under UL 913 and CSA C22.2 No. 157. These certifications allow companies operating
in potentially combustible environments where the presence of flammable gases or
vapors may exist, such as transportation, government, natural resources and oil
and gas, to take advantage of SPOT messaging functionality. Certification was completed
by MET Laboratories, Inc.
FUNCTIONS:
SOS:
Workers can use this function in the event of a life threatening or other critical
emergency to notify emergency services of their GPS location. Once SOS is activated,
SPOT IS will acquire its coordinates from the GPS network, and send that location
along with a distress message every 5 minutes to the GEOS Emergency Response Center.
HOW IT WORKS:
Once activated, SPOT IS will acquire its
exact coordinates from the GPS network, and send that location along with a distress
message to the GEOS International Emergency Response Center every five minutes until
cancelled or until the batteries are depleted. The Emergency Response Center
notifies the appropriate emergency responders based on the GPS location and personal
information - which may include local police, highway patrol, the Coast Guard, the
embassy or consulate, or other emergency search and rescue teams - as well as notifying
the emergency contacts about the receipt of a distress signal.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Even if SPOT IS cannot acquire its location from the GPS network it will still attempt
to send a distress signal - without exact location - to GEOS, which will still notify
the emergency contacts of the signal and continue to monitor the network for further
messages.
9-1-1 EMERGENCY SERVICES POWERED BY GEOS Search and Rescue
HELP:
For less critical emergencies, workers can press this button to send pre-programmed
requests for help to their head office or supervisor for example. Up to 10 contacts
can be pre-programmed to the Help button sending the alert message via e-mail or
SMS.
HOW IT WORKS:
Once activated, SPOT IS acquires its location from the GPS network and routes it
along with the HELP message through the SPOT satellite network every five minutes
for one hour or until cancelled. The predetermined contacts will receive an SMS
text message including coordinates, or an email with a link to Google Maps™ showing
the location.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Even if SPOT IS cannot acquire its location from the GPS network, it will still
attempt to send a HELP message - without exact location - to the predetermined contacts.
CHECK-IN/OK:
For casual check-in messages, workers simply need to press the Check-in/OK button
to advise employers that they have arrived at a location and/or to keep them posted
on where they are at specified intervals. SPOT IS sends a Check-in/OK message once
with the longitude and latitude and a pre-programmed message to the predetermined
contacts. Up to 10 contacts can receive the Check-in/OK message via e-mail or SMS.
HOW IT WORKS:
Once SPOT IS has been activated and the account set up, the contacts can be changed
and the messages can be customized any time online. When the Check-in/OK button
is pushed, a pre-programmed message is sent to the contacts. The contacts will receive
an SMS text message including coordinates, or an email with a link to Google Maps™
showing the location.
CUSTOM MESSAGE:
The Custom Message function operates exactly like the Check-in/OK message. SPOT
IS provides a Custom Message in case the user would like to pre-program different
messages. This extra line of communication provides flexibility and functionality
for the work environment.
HOW IT WORKS:
Once SPOT IS has been activated and the account set up, the contacts can be changed
and the messages can be customized any time online. When the Custom Message button
is pushed, a pre-programmed message is sent to the contacts. The contacts will receive
an SMS text message including coordinates, or an email with a link to Google Maps™
showing the location.
TRACK PROGRESS:
This feature allows employers to track the location of workers even beyond cellular
using Google Maps™. Account holders have the ability to set up a SPOT Shared Page
which allows the SPOT IS GPS locations to be shared easily through a public or private
web page. Once activated, SPOT IS acquires the GPS location every ten minutes for
24 hours or until canceled. Track Progress also helps employers and workers in uncharted
areas to record safe routes for future reference.
HOW IT WORKS:
Once the Track Progress function has been activated, SPOT IS acquires and sends
the GPS coordinates to the SPOT account automatically every 10 minutes for 24 hours
or until canceled. Track progress must be reengaged to continue.
POWER:
To turn SPOT IS on, simply press and hold the ON/OFF button until the button blinks
green. SPOT IS performs a self-diagnostic test. When power is ON, the button will
blink green every 3 seconds. This is helpful for making SPOT IS more visible in
the dark. To turn SPOT IS off, press and hold the ON/OFF button until the light
stops blinking.
SELF TEST:
SPOT IS performs a self-test when you initially turn on your SPOT IS. If all visible
lights flash red, the SPOT IS self-test has found a failure, and SPOT IS will not
send a message. If the On/Off light, GPS light and Message Sending light all blink
red, SPOT IS has a GPS failure, but SPOT IS may still be able to transmit an SOS
or HELP message without your GPS location.
SPOT MESSAGE SCHEDULE:
SPOT IS is designed to provide outstanding quality and reliability. With a perfect
view of the entire sky, the SPOT IS is designed to transmit virtually every message.
In everyday conditions, the view of the sky is often blocked due to hills, buildings,
or other obstructions so it is normal for some messages to be blocked. That is why
the SPOT IS automatically sends multiple messages in every mode, giving you excellent
overall reliability. In some modes this means multiple attempts to send the same
message, while in other modes it means regularly updating GPS coordinates and sending
a new message. Placement of your SPOT IS unit can make a difference. Experiment
with placement until you are familiar with the reliability of your operating environment.
